The Canada Disability Benefit is financial help from the Canadian government through the CRA. It is helping the disabled individuals to pay the bill of basic necessities. Here, we have discussed the eligibility, application process, payment, and more.
If you or anyone in your house has a severe and prolonged disability, you can avail yourself of the benefit of this scheme. Under the CDB initiative, the monthly payment is received from the Canada Revenue Agency to the bank account of the beneficiary.
In a benefit year, which starts in July and ends in June, a benefit gets up to $2400. It is received as cash, so the beneficiary can spend it as per his or her requirement. This scheme was launched recently, and as of now it has thousands of beneficiaries across the country.
This initiative from the Canadian government is highly applauded by the countrymen. By applying for this scheme, one can receive the payment every month to manage monthly expenses smoothly, as the payout is directly received in the bank account.
When and why was the Canada Disability Benefit launched?
The CDB was launched by the Canada Revenue Agency on June 20, 2025, with the start of accepting applications from the eligible individuals. The scheme is launched after going through legislative approval; note the Canada Disability Benefit Act (Bill C-22) was first introduced on June 2, 2022.
After that it received Royal Assent on June 22, 2023, and then it became a law. The regulation for this benefit was published in the Canada Gazette on March 12, 2025, after which it came into force on May 15, 2025. The first payment of the CDB was sent out in July 2025 for the individuals whose applications were approved by June 20, 2025.
The Canada Disability Benefit is launched with the aim of addressing disability-related poverty. In Canada, approximately 1.6 million disabled individuals live in poverty; enhancing financial security so the disabled individuals may cover additional costs associated with their condition.
The CDB also ensures the implementation of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan, which improves the lives of Canadians with disabilities and promotes inclusivity by providing financial support. The scheme is available for all disabled Canadians who are between the ages of 18 and 64.
Who is eligible for benefits?
To get the Canada Disability Benefit, it is mandatory that you meet the following conditions:
- Your age shouldn’t be below 18 or above 64. Note: an individual who has turned 17.5 or more can apply, but his or her application will be accepted by the CRA once he or she turns 18.
- You must be approved for the DTC (Disability Tax Credit);it is only for the individuals who are approved for severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions.
- You or your spouse or law partner must have filed a 2024 federal income tax return as a resident of Canada for tax purposes; it isn’t mandatory to have citizenship of Canada.
How much is received?
If you apply for the CDB, you can get the payment of up to $2,400 in the span of 12 months. The payment is going to be received in twelve equal installments. If you qualify for the maximum benefit, you will get the payment of $200 every month.
Note that to get the maximum CDB payment, an individual is required to meet the income threshold. The income cap for singles and couples is $23,000 and $32,500, with employment income exempted for $10,000 and $14,000.
If your income as a single applicant exceeds the maximum threshold, for each dollar, $0.20 will be deducted; and as a couple, the deduction of $0.10 happens for each $1.
Let’s understand it by an example. Let’s say that as an individual, your income is $35,000, as employment income for individuals is exempted by $10,000, the figure we get is $25,000. As we can see, it is exceeding $2000.
For singles, the deduction is $0.20 for each dollar exceeding the income threshold, so the amount that will be deducted from the maximum benefit will be $400. The payout you can get in a span of a year is $2000, in the monthly installments of $166.66.
