Are you a taxpayer who annually files tax returns? Note that the IRS announced the important dates for tax year 2024 in early January 2025. Here, we have shared everything you need to know. So, read this article thoroughly till the end.
IRS Extension Refund Schedule 2025
As per the Internal Revenue Service, the general deadline for filing the tax refund for tax year 2024 was April 15, 2025, and the extended deadline is October 15, 2025. If you haven’t yet filed your return, you can do so by this and claim a refund of up to hundreds of dollars.
Note that after e-filing for the tax refund, the IRS takes up to three weeks to process it and release the refund. Note that if you have claimed Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) or Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), you have to wait more than the expected time.
Estimated Refund Calendar
The Internal Revenue Service hasn’t released any refund calendar for the tax year 2024. Below, we have shared a schedule to give you an idea of when you can expect your refund if you have filed on a certain date.
| Refund Filed | Refund Sent | Refund Received |
| 27 August | 17 September | 20 September |
| 3 September | 24 September | 27 September |
| 10 September | 1 October | 4 October |
| 17 September | 8 October | 11 October |
| 24 September | 15 October | 18 October |
| 1 October | 22 October | 25 October |
| 8 October | 29 October | 1 November |
| 15 October | 5 November | 8 November |
Note that the payment may be delayed by 72 hours if there is any technical error. The IRS will delay your refund if you have claimed EITC or ACTC in your tax return.
Expected Refund Amount
Your tax refund amount depends on your income and filing details. If you claimed the ACTC (Additional Child Tax Credit) for a qualifying child, you could receive a refund of up to approximately $1,700 per child.
If your income is low or moderate, you may receive an additional refund under the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit). For example, for a family with one child, this could amount to approximately $4,213.
The sum of the two credits increases your total tax refund. For example, if the ACTC is $1,700 and the EITC is $4,213, the total refund could be up to $5,913. Note that the refundable amount for each individual differs.
What if the tax refund isn’t received within 3 weeks?
If your tax refund hasn’t arrived within three weeks, first check the IRS’s “Where’s My Refund?” tool. It will tell you the status of your filing and when your refund will be processed.
Note that sometimes refunds can be delayed by the Internal Revenue Service due to incorrect bank details, a filing error, or additional scrutiny for tax credits such as ACTC and EITC.
If the status doesn’t appear correct even in the tool, dial 1-800-829-1040 to get in touch with the IRS. You will be asked for your SSN, filing status, and tax year, and you will provide details to know the reason behind the refund delay.
How to check the refund status?
You can easily check your tax refund status through the IRS website; the step-by-step instructions are available below.
